Create a Budget That Makes Sense
Getting out of debt may call for drastic measures, but it doesn’t mean that you should sacrifice everything you have in order to achieve it. You need to moderate your efforts with what makes sense for your needs. This basically means that you should create a budget that you can honestly live with.
Before you jump to bankruptcy or plan on selling your home to make ends meet, consider the options you have and maintain a sense of restraint while respecting who you are. It’s important to know just how much you can live without and try to meet those restrictions, but you shouldn’t push yourself beyond what allows you to live a decent life. Put another way, you don’t want to end up living on ramen noodles and bologna for a year just because you want to remove the expense of groceries from the life. On the other hand, you can probably do away with buying all those luxury name brand goods and opt for cheaper alternatives, such as store brands or generics. It’s all about sensible moderation.
Another thing that’s important regarding perspective is maintaining the motivation to succeed. The only way you can get out of debt is by never giving up, but if you’re imposing unrealistic and ruthless measures to obtain that goal, then you may very well end up killing your motivation to succeed. By recognizing what you need and giving yourself some flexibility, you can make the effort to pursue debt elimination much easier.
You should start a debt relief effort by compiling a list of all your expenses and looking over it to understand and recognize where your money goes on a monthly basis. You may find yourself awestruck at the numerous opportunities for saving money, but don’t let yourself get carried away with slashing everything out.
At the same time, don’t be afraid to remove what you truly don’t need. If you buy multivitamins for your health, then you should probably continue to do that. It’s an expense that has long-term benefits. But if you’re buying a lot of junk food for “comfort” then you can probably pull the reigns on that. Same with taking care of your household. Don’t cut out all your cleaning supplies. Instead, get smart about what’s necessary when it comes to maintenance. Baking soda can replace toilet and tub scrubbing solutions that cost several dollars. When doing the laundry, try using half as much soap. It only works at separating oils from clothes, so a little amount goes a very long way when diluted (don’t forget to run cold water too!).
Rewarding yourself is important, however. When you’re lifting the thrifty lifestyle, you want to remind yourself why it’s important to keep on the path of debt relief. When you buy something, save up for it and pay for it with cash. And keep it cheap. You’d be surprised at how good it feels to obtain something knowing you did it with your own hard-earned money while reducing your debt. Taking care of your finances is a full-time effort, but it shouldn’t be punishing. Just know when to draw the line while giving yourself the consideration you deserve.
